14 Proven Hacks To Make Your Fragrance Last Longer

What are the secret little tricks to boost your fragrance longevity?

We all know the struggle: You apply your scent of the day, go out, and after an hour or so you notice the smell is gone. This is extremely frustrating, but lucky for you I’ve gathered 14 best tips to boost the longevity of your scent.

How to Make Your Cologne Lasts Longer

1. DON'T spray a cloud and walk into it.

I’ve done this far too many times in the past, and this is a sure way to kill at least half of your cologne’s performance. Why?

You see, what happens when you spray a cloud is most of the scent lands on the floor. Also, spraying a cloud and walking into it means the scent bubble will spread into a larger area of your body, and your skin will absorb it faster – Making it last a shorter amount of time.

Just spray directly on the skin.

2. Moisturize your spray points.

Moisturized skin holds cologne longer.

So be sure to use lotion (preferably unscented lotion) on your spray points for a longer last.

3. Allow your fragrance to dry before putting a shirt on.

After applying your fragrance, wait a couple of minutes before putting a shirt on.

This allows it to completely dry down, and the shirt won’t wipe the scent off your skin.

4. Apply fragrance on pulse points.

From now on I want you to only focus on spraying your pulse points.

Pulse points produce the most heat out of your whole body, which helps your fragrance radiate and last longer on your skin.

You can find pulse points from behind your ears, neck, heart, wrists, and behind your knees.

5. Don't rub fragrance on wrists.

Listen: You’re not James Bond.

And I wish James Bond read this post before rubbing his cologne between his wrists, because then he’d know that the only thing it does is destroy the top notes and make it last a shorter amount of time.

So don’t rub your wrists. You can (and should) spray on wrists, but don’t rub them together afterward. It’ll only break down the fragrance faster.

6. Just spray more.

Simple as that.

If you truly want your cologne to last longer, why not give it one or two more sprays?

7. Spray on clothes.

Fabrics hold fragrance molecules better.

Most of the time when I spray on clothes, I can still easily smell it the next day no matter how weak the fragrance is.

8. Apply fragrance right after you shower.

When you’re fresh out of the shower, and your skin is still damp, this is the best time to spray your cologne on to get more longevity.

This is because your skin is moisturized, and it will absorb the cologne more effectively than dry skin would.

9. Spray fragrance on hairbrush.

This is a cool little trick I often use.

Just spray fragrance on your hairbrush/comb, and start brushing your hair.

Fragrance lasts a long time on hair because the hair fibers trap your fragrance for a longer time. Avoid spraying directly on hair, because the alcohol in your cologne might damage the scalp.

10. Let your fragrance macerate.

The benefit of macerating your fragrance is that it boosts longevity and gives it a deeper smell.

Here’s how you macerate: Grab your fragrance, turn it upside down, and keep spraying it until nothing comes out. After this put the cap back on, store the bottle in a dark place for a couple of weeks (even better, a couple of months), and after that your maceration is complete.

What this does is it lets air into your fragrance bottle, and that air inside will react with your fragrance over time, giving it more deepness and performance.

Most colognes are macerated before sold, but it’s something you can try.

11. Drink more water.

Stay hydrated throughout the day, and on top of all the other health benefits, you keep your skin moisturized which holds fragrance better.

12. Layer your fragrances.

Layering fragrances means you spray 2 or 3 different fragrances at the same time.

When different notes from each fragrance hit together, you have more of all the notes – And you’ll also have a longer-lasting scent.

You can play around and test all kinds of fragrance combinations, see what you like best.

13. DON'T store fragrances in your bathroom.

If you store your fragrances in your bathroom, here’s what I want you to do:

Get up, walk to your bathroom, take ALL your cologne bottles, and move them to a more “secure” location like a drawer or closet. And you better hope the colognes aren’t all ruined by now.

Because once the wet air in your bathroom goes through the fragrance atomizer straight inside the bottle, it waters down your fragrance, which weakens the performance and smell.

14. Use cotton swabs.

One of my recently discovered hacks that I now use all the time.

Spray your fragrance on a cotton swab, secure it in a ziplock bag (so it won’t dry down), and take the bag with you wherever you go. Once your smell starts to fade away, just reapply by dabbing the fragrance-covered cotton swab on your skin.

Extra Tip: Carry a decant with you.

You can always just get a small 2ml decant bottle, and carry it with you wherever you go. Especially if you’re gone for a long time, and want your fragrance to perform well the whole time, there’s nothing wrong with bringing some backup with you.

What Fragrances Last Longer?

The best way to have a long-lasting scent is to go for fragrances that last longer, with a higher concentration of oils.

These are the fragrances that have Eau De Parfum (EDP) or Parfum in their name.
